InBrace versus Invisalign

InBrace Versus Invisalign

October 28, 2024

If you are debating between InBrace versus Invisalign to discreetly transform your smile, this blog post is for you. This blog post will discuss how these two options differ and the pros and cons of each option.

Esthetics: The Discreet Factor

Both InBrace and Invisalign are far more esthetic options than traditional braces. InBrace is unique in that it is hidden behind your teeth, making it completely invisible when you smile. We have many patients who comment that their friends and colleagues never realized they were undergoing orthodontic treatment throughout their entire orthodontic journey. On the other hand, Invisalign, though much more discreet than metal braces, still require tooth-colored attachments and a transparent plastic tray. While these are much more socially acceptable for adults compared to traditional braces, they are still slightly more noticeable than InBrace.

Compliance: Fixed vs. Removable

One significant advantage of InBrace over Invisalign is that it doesn’t require patient compliance as it is fixed to the back of your teeth. Once InBrace is placed, you don't need to worry about taking it in and out. However, for Invisalign, it is required to wear them for 22 hours a day to achieve the best results. If you forget or don’t wear Invisalign consistently, your teeth will not move as predictably, and it can extend your treatment time.

Comfort and Speech

Both InBrace and Invisalign will cause some discomfort due to the movement of your teeth, and each can impact your speech until you adjust to them. Patients who have InBrace tend to have a harder adjustment period during the initial two-week break-in period, but once you get used to it, most patients don’t even notice InBrace anymore. Invisalign patients will also experience an initial two-week break-in period, just typically on a smaller scale compared to InBrace.

Hygiene

For oral hygiene, InBrace has a slight edge over traditional braces since it allows you to floss normally as there are loops in the Smartwires in between each tooth. However, food particles can sometimes get trapped around the Smartwire, so a water flosser is regularly needed. With Invisalign, brushing and flossing remain easy, as you can simply remove the trays.

Cost Considerations

Both InBrace and Invisalign are treatment modalities that are customized per patient, which means they tend to be more expensive than traditional braces. InBrace tends to be slightly more expensive than Invisalign in most offices.

Treatment Capabilities and Outcomes

Both InBrace and Invisalign are highly predictable and effective treatment options when in the hands of experienced providers. At Life Orthodontics, Dr. Lee and Dr. Pi are experts in both systems, allowing them to treat nearly any orthodontic case with either option. While treatment times are generally comparable between the two options, Invisalign can take longer if compliance is an issue. Certain cases may be better suited to one system over the other, and Dr. Lee and Dr. Pi can help assess that on an individual basis.

Which is Better?

The answer depends on your lifestyle. If you want a completely hidden, fixed option that requires no daily compliance, InBrace might be the better choice. If you prefer the flexibility of a removable option, clear aligners like Invisalign or Angel Aligner could be the best fit for you. As mentioned in our previous blog post, our office has chosen to use Angel Aligner over Invisalign for several reasons.
